The setup flow
After your script is processed, Offbook walks you through a short setup:
- Project title: confirm or rename your scene (it defaults to the file name).
- Microphone test: say a few words so we can confirm your mic is working. This step completes automatically once we hear you clearly.
- Speaker test: we play a short sound and ask if you heard it.
If you've already completed the mic and speaker tests before, we skip them.
Choose your role
Next, pick the character you'll be playing. Offbook reads everyone else's lines and listens for yours.
If your script has no speaking roles (a narration or monologue you just want to hear), choose Continue in Listen Mode to have the whole piece read to you.
Assign voices to the other characters
Every other character in the scene gets an AI voice:
- Auto-assign: confirm each character's gender and Offbook matches suitable voices automatically.
- Pick manually: browse the voice library and tap the play button to preview any voice before choosing it.
Six voices are included on every plan; Pro and Premium unlock the full library of 20+ voices. See AI voices & audio for details.
Missing a character?
If the AI missed someone (or you want to add a reader for stage directions), click Add New Character, type the character's name, choose a voice, and their lines can be added from the scene editor.
