What does an AI scene partner do?

A scene partner gives you something to play against. Without one, most actors end up reading the other lines in their head, which trains you to wait for your turn instead of listening for it.

An AI scene partner fills that gap. In Offbook, AI voices read every character you are not playing. Offbook listens through your microphone while you speak. When you finish your line, it plays the next cue. If you need a moment, it waits. If you go up on a line, you can look, try again, or say “next line” to move on.

Your AI partner is there at midnight, on a Sunday, or ten minutes before you leave for the audition. It will run the same two pages forty times without complaint. That is not a replacement for a great human partner, but it does cover the hours of repetition that come before the good work in the room.

How to rehearse with the Offbook scene partner app

Upload the scene, cast your partners, and start

01

Upload the scene

Add a PDF, photos of the pages, a text file, or pasted text. Offbook detects the characters and their lines.

02

Choose your part

Pick who you play. You can switch roles at any time from Scene Controls and run the scene from the other side.

03

Cast your partners

Smart match gives each character a fitting AI voice. Preview voices and swap any of them. Twelve voices come with every plan.

04

Rehearse out loud

Offbook plays your partners' lines and listens for yours. Finish a line and the next cue comes in. Spacebar pauses.

Shape how your AI scene partner reads

A cue that comes too fast or too flat throws off your timing. These controls let you set up the read you need.

Per-line speed

Set any line from 0.5× to 2×, so a fast exchange stays fast and a slow build gets room.

Pauses before a line

Add 0.5 to 5 seconds before a cue to hold a beat instead of jumping on it.

Voice Clone

Record a partner's line in your own voice when you need it delivered with an exact pace or emphasis.

Regenerate a read

Not happy with how a line sounds? Generate fresh audio for it, or change the character's voice.

Stage directions

Skip them, have a narrator read them, or show them on screen and hold the scene while you play the action.

Teleprompter mode

Show your active line front and center, with each word highlighted as you say it.

AI scene partner vs. a human scene partner

They are good at different things. Most actors get the most from using both.

An AI scene partner is best for

  • Repetition: running a scene again and again until the words are automatic
  • Odd hours and short notice, with nobody to schedule
  • Drilling one tricky section without using up a friend's patience
  • A consistent read, so you can tell what changed in your own work
  • Learning your cues by switching roles

A human partner is best for

  • Live reactions that change how you play the moment
  • Chemistry, physical contact, and blocking
  • Notes and outside eyes on your choices
  • Final runs before a callback or an opening

A simple split: learn the lines with Offbook, then bring them to your partner or class ready to play. For more ideas, read how to practice lines without a scene partner.

Ways actors use a scene partner app

Audition sides

Upload the sides, trim the scene to your pages, and run it until you can play it with the paper down. Then use the same scene as your reader for the tape. See self taping without a reader.

A full play, one scene at a time

Upload each scene or act on its own, then work through them with scene looping and hidden lines. Duplicate a scene to keep one full version and one cut-down version for drilling.

Class scene work

Share the scene with your class partner. You each rehearse on your own time with your own role, and you arrive at rehearsal with the words already learned.

Script analysis between runs

Genie, Offbook's script assistant, reads your scene and answers questions about motivation, subtext, and beats. Switch its style to Director's Chair, Acting Coach, or Script Analyst depending on the kind of feedback you want.

Tips for rehearsing with an AI scene partner

  • Wear headphones while you learn. They keep your partner's audio out of your microphone, so Offbook hears only you.
  • Start lenient, finish strict. Forgiving detection is fine early on. Switch to Strict when you are close to word perfect.
  • Hide your lines early. When your text is gone, you have to listen to the cue instead of reading ahead.
  • Put the beats in. Add a pause before a line where you want a moment, so the scene does not rush you.
  • Swap roles once. Hearing the scene from the other side shows you what your partner needs from you.

What an AI scene partner cannot do

  • It does not improvise or change its read in response to your choices. The delivery comes from the text and the settings you choose.
  • Rehearsing out loud needs a laptop or desktop browser with a microphone. Phones and tablets are for listening only, for now.
  • Uploading scripts needs a plan or an active trial. Generating new AI audio uses a monthly allowance, but running a scene again does not.

Beyond expectations

Offbook is transforming how actors prepare for their roles, enabling faster memorization and deeper character work across theater and film.

Scene partner AI: common questions

Is there an app that can be my scene partner?

Yes. Offbook is a scene partner app for actors. You upload your script and choose your role, and AI voices read the other characters. Offbook listens through your microphone and plays the next cue when you finish your line.

Does the AI scene partner react to how I say my line?

Not in the way a human partner does. Offbook listens to know when you have finished your line, then plays the next cue. The delivery comes from the script text. You can shape it with per-line speed, pauses, regenerated audio, or Voice Clone.

Can I rehearse with a real scene partner too?

Yes. Share a scene and your partner can rehearse it with their own role choice. Starter lets you invite up to 5 people per scene by email. Pro and Premium add unlimited invites and a share link. Free accounts can practice scenes shared with them.

Can I run the scene as the other character?

Yes. Open Scene Controls and pick a different character under Your Role. It is a good way to learn your cues from the inside.

Can I use the scene partner app on my phone?

On a phone or tablet you can listen to your scenes, but not rehearse out loud. Rehearsing with the microphone needs a laptop or desktop browser for now, and we recommend Chrome. An iPhone app is coming soon.

How much does Offbook cost?

Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a card is required. After the trial, Starter is $9.99/mo, Pro is $14.99/mo, and Premium is $29.99/mo. Annual billing starts at $7.99/mo.
