The best line learning app depends on where you rehearse and how you want your cues read. If you want an app that listens and answers like a real reader, look at AI scene partners such as Offbook, coldRead, Counterpart, ScenePartner, Linus, Line Learner AI, and Acting Pal. If you prefer to record cues in your own voice and keep costs low, LineLearner, Rehearsal Pro, Script Rehearser, or the voice memo app on your phone will do the job.
Offbook is our product, so we tell you where it fits and where another app may suit you better. Prices and platforms come from each app's official site or App Store listing as of October 2026 and can change.
How We Evaluated Line Learning Apps
We read each app's official site or App Store listing and compared them on seven points:
- Cue detection: Does the app hear you finish your line and play the next cue, or do you tap or wait through a timed gap?
- Voices: Your own recordings, a friend, device voices, AI voices, or recorded actors.
- Script import: PDF, photos of your sides, or typing and recording every line yourself.
- Offline use: Will it work on a plane or in a theater basement with no signal?
- Platform: iPhone, iPad, Mac, Android, or a web browser.
- Price model: One-time purchase, subscription, passes, or a free tier.
- Self-tape support: Does it record video, or act as your reader while you film on another device?
We did not give the apps a single score. An actor learning a two-page side needs something different from an actor learning a lead in a full-length play, so each section ends with who the app is best for.

Offbook: An AI Scene Partner for Your Laptop (Our App)
Offbook is our product, so read this section with that in mind. We describe it the same way as the others: what it does, what it costs, and where it falls short.
How it works
You upload a script as a PDF (up to 50 pages), photos of the pages (PNG or JPG), a text file, or pasted text. Offbook's AI detects each character and separates stage directions from dialogue. You pick the role you are playing, and every other character gets an AI voice. Smart match suggests a voice for each character, and you can change any of them.
During practice, Offbook plays the other characters' lines out loud and then listens through your microphone. When you finish your line, the scene moves on, much like working with a real reader. You choose how strict it is. Strict mode expects wording close to the script. Lenient mode forgives paraphrasing, with a slider to set how much. Manual mode never advances on its own, so you press Enter or say "next line."
Memorization tools
- Hide your lines: your dialogue disappears while your partners' lines stay visible.
- First-letter cues: show only the first letters of each word, or only the first word of each line.
- Hide the entire script: a final test with nothing on screen but your partner's voice.
- Listen mode: hear the whole scene, including your lines, for a commute or warm-up.
- Scene looping and Teleprompter mode: run the scene back to back, or see each word highlight as you say it.
Stage directions can be read aloud, shown silently, or shown with a pause so you can play the action. Voice Clone lets you record a line yourself to set its exact pacing.
Limitations to know
- Rehearsing out loud needs a computer. Practice with the microphone runs in a laptop or desktop browser, and we recommend Chrome. On phones and tablets, Offbook is listen-only: you can play your scenes but not rehearse them aloud. An iPhone app is coming soon.
- It needs an internet connection. Speech recognition streams over a live connection, so Offbook is not an offline app.
- No permanent free plan for your own scripts. Uploading scripts needs a plan or an active trial. Free accounts can practice scenes that someone has shared with them.
- For self-tapes, plan on a second device. Offbook works as your reader from the laptop while you film on your phone or camera.
Pricing
Starter is $9.99 a month, Pro is $14.99, and Premium is $29.99, or $7.99, $11.99, and $23.99 a month billed annually. Every plan starts with a 7-day free trial, and a card is required. There is no monthly cap on script uploads. Generating new AI audio uses a monthly allowance (50,000 characters on Starter, 100,000 on Pro, 200,000 on Premium), but rehearsing a scene once its audio exists does not. Starter includes 12 voices, and Pro and Premium unlock a larger library. Students and educators get 50% off with a valid .edu email. See the pricing page for details.
Best for: actors who rehearse at a laptop or desktop, on Mac or Windows, and want to upload a PDF and have every other role read aloud, including as a reader for self-tapes. If you mainly rehearse on your phone or need to work offline, an app below will fit better. Learn more on our AI line learner page.
AI Scene Partner Apps That Listen for Your Cue
These apps hear you finish your line and then play the next one, so you do not tap or sit through a fixed gap. They differ in where the voices come from, which devices they run on, and how you pay.
coldRead
coldRead runs on iPhone, iPad, and Apple silicon Macs, with an Apple Watch remote. You record your lines, and when you say the last word of your line (the cue), coldRead plays the next line. Its site says it needs no internet connection, email, or sign-up, and recordings stay on your device. It also has a teleprompter, self-tape recording, and support for many languages.
Price: free for scripts under 8 lines. Unlimited access is a subscription: $10.99 for one month, $26.99 for three months, or $83.99 for a year.
Best for: iPhone and iPad users who want cue-responsive rehearsal that works offline and keeps recordings on the device. We compare it with Offbook in more detail on our coldRead alternative page.
Counterpart
Counterpart runs on iPhone, iPad, and Mac. It listens for the Cue Word of your line (the final word by default), then plays the next line. The reader can be your own recorded voice, a friend's voice, or AI text-to-speech, and friends can record their lines in a web browser with no download or account. It imports PDF scripts, including scanned pages and sides, and records self-tapes.
Price: free download, with Counterpart Studio at $6.99 a month or $58.99 a year.
Best for: Apple users who want to mix human and AI voices, and who want a lower subscription price.
ScenePartner
ScenePartner (scenepartner.ai) is built around audition self-tapes. It runs on the web and on iOS. You upload your script, the AI voices read the other lines, and its site says it listens for your cues and speaks the other lines in real time. It also has a memorization mode and lets friends record their lines for you to rehearse with.
Price: plans are priced by auditions per month. The free plan includes 3 auditions with scripts up to 10 pages. Plus is $12.99 a month for 10 auditions. Pro is $29.99 a month for 100 auditions and scripts up to 150 pages.
Best for: actors whose main need is a reader for audition tapes, especially if they tape a few auditions a month.
Linus
Linus, from Actors Kit, is on iPhone and iPad. Its voices come from real actors, chosen by accent, tone, age, or gender, and the listing says the actor gets paid each time you rehearse with their voice. It waits for you to finish your line before responding. You can loop tricky moments, hide lines, and use first-letter prompts. For self-tapes, it has a scrolling teleprompter and lets you record, edit, and favorite takes.
Price: free download with in-app purchases. Short passes start at $1.99 for 3 days, and subscriptions start at $9.99 a month, with a Premium tier at $19.99 a month.
Best for: iPhone actors who want human-recorded voices and a built-in self-tape teleprompter, or who want a short pass for a single audition.
Line Learner AI
Line Learner AI is a different app from LineLearner (below). It runs on iPhone and Apple silicon Macs. You choose an AI voice for each character, and it listens to each line you say as it moves through the scene. It imports PDF, Final Draft, and Fountain scripts; PDFs need real text, not scanned images. You can also record yourself saying your lines.
Price: $12.99 a month or $69.99 a year.
Best for: iPhone users who work from Final Draft or Fountain files, such as writer-performers.
Acting Pal
Acting Pal runs on iPhone and iPad. You import a PDF and it pulls out the dialogue. It recognizes when you finish your line and responds. Memorize mode shows only the first letter of each word. You can use AI voices with a range of tones, ages, and accents, or your own recorded audio. It records self-tapes in portrait or landscape with a built-in teleprompter.
Price: $9.99 a month after a 3-day free trial.
Best for: actors who want first-letter memorization and phone self-taping in one app.
Record-and-Playback Line Learning Apps
This is the classic approach, and many actors still prefer it. You record the cues yourself or with a castmate, and the app plays them back with space for your lines. Two of the three apps below have a one-time price. The trade-off is setup time: you record every cue, and again when the script changes.
LineLearner
LineLearner, by Peter Allday, runs on iPhone, iPad, and Apple silicon Macs. You record your lines and cues one by one, then play back everything or only your cues, with gaps where you speak. You can load a PDF or Word script while you record, and change the pitch of the other characters so they sound different from you. You can also share a recorded script with castmates, who add their lines and share it back.
Price: $3.99, one-time, with no in-app purchases. LineLearner lite is free for up to 10 lines.
Best for: theater actors on a budget, and casts who want to rehearse together while apart.
Rehearsal Pro
Rehearsal Pro, from Sotto Voce Filmworks, runs on iPhone, iPad, and Apple silicon Macs. It is a script organizer as well as a line tool. You import PDF or Word scripts or photograph your pages, highlight your lines and your partners' lines in different colors, then record and play back while the script scrolls like a teleprompter. Voice actors can email auditions as MP3 files.
Price: $19.99, one-time.
Best for: actors who want a digital script binder with markup, plus recording, in one paid app.
Script Rehearser
Script Rehearser, by Engram Ltd, is on iPhone, iPad, and Mac, and its official site also lists Android. You import a PDF (text-based, not scanned) or type your lines. The app reads the other lines with built-in digital voices, or you can record your own voice. It has several modes, including Listen Along, Wait For Me, and Run Through.
Price: free to download. On the App Store, Pro is $7.99 a year or $29.99 as a one-time upgrade.
Best for: Android users, and anyone who wants to start for free with computer voices instead of recording every cue.
The Free Option: Voice Memos
Your phone's voice recorder costs nothing and runs offline.
- Record the other characters' lines in a neutral voice. After each cue, leave silence about as long as your line.
- Record a second track with the whole scene, including your lines, for passive listening.
- Play the cue track on a loop and say your lines into the gaps. Switch to the full track when you are walking or commuting.
The limits are real. The gaps are fixed, so the recording does not wait if you pause or go faster. Hearing every character in your own voice can blur who is speaking. You also re-record whenever the script changes. For more ways to rehearse alone, see our guide to practicing lines without a scene partner. For a full memorization method to pair with any app, read how to memorize lines quickly.
How to Choose the Right Line Learning App
For cold reads and last-minute auditions
Speed from sides to rehearsal matters most. Choose an app that imports a PDF and reads the other roles for you, so you are not recording cues the night before. Offbook, ScenePartner, Counterpart, Acting Pal, and Linus all work from an imported script. Our cold read app page shows how Offbook handles this.
For long plays and big roles
Check script limits. Offbook accepts PDFs up to 50 pages per upload, so you split a full-length play by act or scene. ScenePartner's Pro plan takes scripts up to 150 pages. With LineLearner or Rehearsal Pro, you record every cue yourself. Listen modes and looping help you absorb a long part over weeks.
For self-tapes
If you want one phone to film and read, look at apps with built-in video recording: coldRead, Counterpart, Linus, Acting Pal, and ScenePartner. If you tape with a phone or camera and a laptop beside it, Offbook can be your reader from the laptop.
For a tight budget
Start with voice memos or one of the free tiers listed in the FAQ below. LineLearner is a one-time $3.99. Students should ask about discounts; Offbook gives 50% off with a .edu email.
For offline rehearsal
coldRead says it runs fully on your device with no internet connection. Voice memos work anywhere. Offbook needs an internet connection, so it is not the right pick for a flight or a dressing room with no signal.
For Android and Windows users
Most of the apps here are listed on Apple's App Store. Script Rehearser's official site lists Android. If you rehearse on a Windows laptop, Offbook runs in a desktop browser on Windows as well as Mac, and ScenePartner has a web version.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the best AI line learning app?
There is no single best one; it depends on your device and goal. Offbook is built for rehearsing full scripts at a laptop with AI voices. coldRead fits iPhone users who want offline rehearsal. Counterpart mixes your voice, a friend's, and AI voices. Linus suits self-tapes with human-recorded voices. Most offer a free version or trial, so try two before you commit.
Is there a free app to learn lines?
Yes. Your phone's voice recorder is free and works offline. Script Rehearser is free to download. LineLearner lite is free for up to 10 lines, coldRead is free for scripts under 8 lines, and ScenePartner has a free plan with 3 auditions. Offbook offers a 7-day free trial (card required), not a permanent free plan for your own scripts.
Can an app read lines with you?
Yes. Record-and-playback apps like LineLearner play cues you recorded, with gaps for your lines. AI scene partner apps go further: Offbook, coldRead, Counterpart, ScenePartner, Linus, Line Learner AI, and Acting Pal listen as you speak and play the next line when you finish yours. That feels closer to working with a real reader, because the app follows your pace.
What is the best app to memorize lines for a play?
Look for tools that hide your lines, show first-letter cues, and loop scenes; Offbook, Linus, and Acting Pal have some of these. LineLearner suits theater on a budget because it is a one-time purchase and castmates can share recordings. Whatever you choose, learn the play scene by scene.
Do line learning apps work offline?
Some do. coldRead says it works with no internet connection, and voice memos always do. Apps that use cloud speech recognition or AI voices, including Offbook, need a connection while you rehearse. If you often rehearse without signal, check this before you subscribe.
If a laptop-based AI scene partner sounds right, try Offbook free for 7 days. If another app fits your routine better, use that one. The best line learning app is the one you open every day until you are off book.
