What is cold reading, and why practice it?
A cold read is reading a scene out loud with little or no time to prepare. It happens at auditions when you get sides at the door, at callbacks when the pages change, at table reads, and in class. Some actors freeze. Others make it look easy.
The difference is practice. Good cold readers keep their eyes up, take in a phrase at a glance, listen to the other person, and commit to a choice before they are sure of it. None of that comes from reading silently. You build it by reading new material out loud, opposite someone, again and again.

Cold reading techniques to practice
Scan for the essentials first
In your scan, skip the details. Find three things: who you are talking to, what you want from them, and the moment the scene turns. Those three give you a choice to play, even if you know nothing else.
Look down, grab a phrase, look up
Glance at the page, take in the next few words, then lift your eyes and say them to your partner. Do not read and speak at the same time. This rhythm feels slow at first. With reps it becomes invisible.
Listen to the cue, not just the end of it
Your next line is an answer. If you only wait for your turn, you will miss what the other character just gave you. With Offbook reading the cues out loud, practice taking them in before you look down.
Keep going when you stumble
In the room, a fumbled word matters far less than a stopped scene. If you trip, carry on. Offbook's forgiving line detection lets you do the same in practice.
Commit to one clear choice
A specific choice that is a little wrong reads better than a careful, neutral one. On your second pass, try the opposite choice and notice what changes.

What is a cold read app?
A cold read app gives you a way to practice reading a scene out loud with little or no preparation, with someone or something reading the other lines. Offbook does this with AI voices: you upload the scene, pick your role, and read your lines while it reads the rest.
How can I practice cold reading at home?
Read lots of material you have never seen, out loud, opposite a reader. Give yourself a short scan, read the scene once, then read it again with a different choice. Offbook gives you the reader, so you can do this alone, any time.
Does Offbook give me scripts to practice with?
No. Offbook does not include a library of practice scenes. You upload your own: audition sides, plays, screenplays, or class scenes. Scripts work best when each character's name appears before their lines.
Can I see the whole script while I read?
Yes. The full script stays on screen unless you choose to hide your lines. For cold reading, keep everything visible and use Teleprompter mode or a larger font if it helps.
Can I use Offbook on my phone?
On a phone or tablet you can listen to your scenes, but reading out loud with the microphone needs a laptop or desktop browser for now. We recommend Chrome. An iPhone app is coming soon.
